Religious Fatalism

Some have a religion concerned only with not doing anything wrong. This puts you in the category of the person in the parable of the talents (opportunities of the kingdom) who buried the talent (opportunity) he was given out of fear of doing something wrong with that opportunity.

Lord, help us live by faith, not fear of doing something wrong.

The Parable of the Talents

The parable of the talents is often superimposed with our own world view of what a talent was. The biblical view of the talents is "not natural endowments given to humanity in general, but the specific privileges and opportunities of the kingdom of heaven". This is not our talent of singing, or crunching numbers, or writing, or athleticism, or the lack of it. The talents or bags of gold, are the specific privileges and opportunities of the kingdom of heaven. I have heard preachers say, "if you don't use your singing, teaching, administrative talents for God's work, you will lose them, and base this on the parable of the talents. This has contributed to the burn out and guilt often found among active church going followers of Jesus Christ. Doing all things for the glory of God with all of one's natural endowments is a more biblical approach to life in following Jesus. The talents or bags of gold are the opportunities to bring yourself and others into a deepening, maturing relationship with God.

Lord, help us overcome burnout and guilt that has been imposed upon us by a lack of biblical knowledge. Do help us view positively the privileges and opportunities that you arrange for us, so we can grow in our relationship with you, and to invite others into a relationship with you.

Running Cancer and Chemotherapy free

Saturday, November 5 will be the first race in memory that I will be running free of cancer and chemotherapy. The journey into and through the valley of the shadow of death will be celebrated in the Mountain Masochist 50 mile trail run. I pray this is an encouragement to those who may be just starting on their journey a valley of the shadow of death.

Lord, thank you for your carrying grace through cancer and chemotherapy. I offer this and all future races up unto you,

In Jesus name, amen.
