In multicultural ministry I hear the following many times.
“Jesus was a great teacher, but it was only his followers who made him divine. Jesus never acknowledged that he was divine!”
I gently speak truth and refer to the following scripture and others:
Luke 22: 67 “If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me,68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.
69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”
He replied, “You are right in saying I am.”
Many, especially in other cultures are taught that Jesus was made divine by those who worshipped him, but never actually was. The truth is plain, but even plain truth is difficult to swallow. Jesus at the point of being on trial was being asked questions that if answered a certain way would mean certain death. Jesus told them “you got that right!”, when asked if he was the son of God.
Can we get this right?
Can we gently help others overcome what they were taught and know as truth?
